Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Joint Genome Institute (JGI ) has an opening for a Computational Biologist Research Scientist to lead data analysis projects in fungal comparative genomics and multi-omics.

In this exciting role, you will work on the development of novel analysis workflows for multi-omics data integration projects. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with JGI users and researchers to develop new approaches with the goal of creating capabilities and resources. As a Research Scientist you will devise and implement new approaches for data analysis and visualization, making significant contributions to the overall direction of research projects.

The JGI ’s mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOE”s research mission to solve the world’s evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab’s main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour ).

What You Will Do:

• Lead the development of new workflows and computational analysis pipelines in support of strategically important new scientific areas including fungal comparative genomics and multi-omics. 
• Develop and lead independent proof-of-principle research projects that demonstrate new JGI science capabilities to future JGI users. 
• Use expert knowledge of genome biology and bioinformatics to provide interpretation of genomic and multi-omics datasets and present findings to internal and external scientific staff at various forums. 
• Contribute to the development of new approaches to study genome biology, collaborating broadly with other JGI and external scientific staff. 
• Serve as expert JGI scientist in meetings with external users.
• Provide scientific advice to resolve complex issues arising during JGI project execution and analysis including communicating JGI’s scientific capabilities. 
• Present data at scientific conferences and publish data in peer reviewed scientific journals. 
• Mentor and train postdoctoral fellows, technical staff, group members, and JGI staff as necessary.

What is Required:

• A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience beyond the highest customary degree in Life Sciences or Quantitative Biology.
• Demonstrated Bioinformatics programming and analysis experience in Python, database knowledge in MySQL, and skills in data visualization tools in a UNIX environment.
• Demonstrated experience using integrated databases and parallel computing environments. 
• Experience with genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, DNA methylation, and other omics data integration and analyses. 
• Advanced understanding of organismal biology, inter-organismal interactions, metabolic processes, and gene networks. 
• Strong knowledge of platforms/tools for comparative genomics platforms (MycoCosm, PhycoCosm, etc). 
• Excellent organizational skills including the ability to perform research and organize data for publications and presentations. 
• Demonstrated analytical skills including the ability to troubleshoot highly complex technical problems, recommend and implement actions. 
• Experience managing complex projects including advanced analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills. 
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues with tact and diplomacy.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to organize and present research for publications and presentations. 
• Demonstrated ability to write proposals and obtain funding.

• This position has a targeted salary range of $96,336-$179,832 per year for job code S06.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
